IASIS Healthcare strongly disagrees with any limitation on a physician’s opportunity to hold an ownership interest in a full service, general acute care hospital and is actively advocating for you – our physician partners – on Capitol Hill against this legislation.
Our opposition is based on our belief that physician investment provides a long-established, competitive alternative to hospital ownership by Wall Street, non-physician private investors, government entities and non-taxpaying organizations and that physician-ownership of hospitals, in fact, results in more competition in the marketplace, lower prices, a greater ability to control costs, higher quality of care, innovation, better customer service, greater access and increased patient choice.
IASIS Healthcare has used local investment, including from members of its hospitals’ medical staffs, to systematically improve our hospital facilities, technology and operations and enhance competition with our marketplaces.
Below you will find several pieces of information that further explain our position on this issue, including:

- The Center for Health System Change recently published a report that found the following:
“Despite initial challenges recruiting staff and maintaining service volumes and patient referrals, general hospitals were generally able to respond to the initial entry of specialty hospitals with few, if any, changes in the provision of care for financially vulnerable patients, according to a new study by the Center for Studying Health System Change (HSC) of three markets with established specialty hospitals—Indianapolis, Phoenix and Little Rock, Ark. In addition, safety net hospitals—general hospitals that care for a disproportionate share of financially vulnerable patients—reported limited impact from specialty hospitals since safety net hospitals generally do not compete for insured patients.”
